Understanding the Process
What Is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that examines how an individual learns by measuring cognitive abilities, academic achievement, and related processing skills. It provides a detailed picture of intellectual strengths, areas of difficulty, and whether criteria are met for specific learning disabilities.
The purpose of a psychoeducational assessment is to provide a clear, objective understanding of how you or your child learns—and to translate that understanding into practical recommendations for school, work, or daily life.
At Stradwick Clinic, all psychoeducational assessments are conducted by registered psychologists using current, validated testing instruments. Our reports are accepted by school boards, post-secondary institutions, and professional regulatory bodies across Ontario.

Who Is This Assessment For?
Who We Help
We provide psychoeducational assessments for learners of all ages, recognizing that learning challenges can look very different depending on the individual and their stage of life.
Children & Adolescents
Parents and educators often pursue psychoeducational assessment when a student is struggling academically despite adequate effort, or when there are concerns about a possible learning disability, giftedness, or both. Early identification helps ensure children receive the right accommodations and support at school.
Adults
Many adults seek psychoeducational assessment to understand lifelong learning difficulties that were never formally identified. Whether you are pursuing post-secondary education, professional development, or simply want clarity about how you learn best, a formal assessment can provide answers and open doors to appropriate support.
A note on learning differences: We approach psychoeducational assessment with the understanding that everyone learns differently. Our goal is to identify each individual’s unique profile of strengths and challenges so they can access the support and strategies that work best for them.
What the Assessment Involves
The Process
Our assessment process is thorough and individualized, designed to build a complete picture of how you learn while ensuring a comfortable, supportive experience.
Initial Intake & History Review
We begin by collecting a thorough developmental, educational, and medical history. You will complete intake questionnaires covering academic experiences, learning challenges, and relevant background information prior to your first appointment.
Clinical Interview
A comprehensive interview with the assessing psychologist explores your concerns, learning history, academic strengths and struggles, and how difficulties may be affecting school, work, or daily life. For children, this includes a detailed parent interview.
Cognitive & Academic Testing
You will complete a battery of standardized measures assessing intellectual abilities, academic achievement, memory, processing speed, and other cognitive functions. These tests provide an objective profile of how you learn and where difficulties may lie.
Collateral Information
When appropriate, we gather additional perspectives from teachers, tutors, or other professionals who can provide insight into how learning difficulties present across different environments.
Integration & Interpretation
Your psychologist carefully integrates all collected data—history, interview findings, cognitive and academic test results, and collateral information—to identify learning profiles, strengths, and any areas meeting diagnostic criteria.
Feedback & Report
You receive a comprehensive written report with diagnostic conclusions, a detailed learning profile, and practical recommendations tailored to your educational or workplace setting. A feedback session is provided to review results and discuss next steps.

“Understanding how you learn is the foundation for unlocking your full potential.”

Common Questions
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive abilities and academic skills conducted by a registered psychologist. It identifies learning strengths, areas of difficulty, and whether criteria are met for specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia.
The cost of a private psychoeducational assessment varies depending on complexity. At Stradwick Clinic, we provide transparent fee information during your initial inquiry. While not covered by OHIP, many extended health insurance plans offer partial coverage for psychological services. We recommend checking with your provider.
Absolutely. Many adults seek psychoeducational assessment to understand learning difficulties that were never identified in childhood. Our psychologists have experience assessing adult learners, including those pursuing post-secondary education or professional development.
The full process typically spans several weeks. This includes completing intake questionnaires, attending in-person testing sessions (usually 4–6 hours of face-to-face time across multiple appointments), and receiving your comprehensive report and feedback session.
A psychoeducational assessment focuses specifically on cognitive abilities, academic achievement, and learning profiles. A psychodiagnostic assessment is broader in scope and evaluates emotional, behavioural, and psychological functioning. Depending on your concerns, one or both may be recommended.
Yes. Psychoeducational assessment includes a comprehensive measure of cognitive abilities, which can identify giftedness. It can also identify twice-exceptional profiles—where giftedness coexists with a learning disability—which often go unrecognized without formal testing.
Private psychoeducational assessments are not covered by OHIP. Some school boards offer assessments through their own psychology teams, though wait times can be significant. A private assessment at our clinic provides a timely, thorough alternative.
